Welcome to the web page of Mrs. Cyrene Hardy, Athens Drive High School PE teacher! Here is a little bit about me! I graduated from Brigham Young University in 1992. I came out here to North Carolina shortly after graduating and began teaching at Clayton Middle School. I taught and coached there for 5 years, and decided I wanted to make the move to High School. I then worked at Triton High School for one year. Then in 2000, I made the move to Athens Drive High! I have been here for 17 years now and have enjoyed my time here! I have been teaching now for 24 years altogether. I have played and enjoyed sports and fitness all my life, and consider teaching PE the best job in the world for me. I believe that sports/fitness is very important in everyone's life, and especially the youth. I believe it helps teach our youth responsibility, teamwork, dependability, and gives a them strength, confidence and happiness. In a world of fast food, too much stress and not enough exercise, I feel it is so important to ingrain the principles of a healthy lifestyle as soon as we can and as much as we can, so that they can have the skills they need to play the sports they want to, or to understand how to maintain a healthy level of fitness. So, play on, have fun and get fit!!
I have included in this webpage the letters that I will send home with each of the students in my class, for each of the classes that I teach, and any attachments/other information that might be helpful. If you should need to contact me, I can be reached by e-mail at chardy@wcpss.net, or my office phone is (919) 233-4072, ext. 24914.
Welcome to Athens Drive High School and to the Health and Physical Education Department! Below we’ve included some IMPORTANT information concerning your class.
Department Parent Letter
APPROPRIATE GYM ATTIRE: All students are required to change into clothing that is appropriate for physical activity every single day that they are in physical education, no exceptions. Some examples of appropriate gym attire are as follows: t shirt/long sleeve t shirt, shorts, sweatpants, yoga pants, tennis shoes/running shoes. You will be graded on your daily dress out. Grading is done as follows: a student earns 20 points a day, 100 points per week for dressing out and participating. If a student does not dress out and doesn’t participate, he/she receives a -20 pts for the day. If a student doesn’t dress but participates FULLY, -10 pts. If a student dresses out, but doesn’t participate to expectations, -10 pts. If a student doesn’t have the right shoes, one item of their outfit is missing, or they do not participate in warm-ups, -5 pts. ABSENCES AND GRADING: Every student gets ONE free day every quarter where they may not dress out and not participate without any penalty. If you are absent from school or class AND IT IS UNEXCUSED, you CANNOT make up the points missed. IF YOU HAVE A NOTE EXCUSING YOUR ABSENCEYOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for following up with the teacher to ask for make-up work to earn your daily 20 points if your class is in PE or what work/notes you missed while in Health. If you DO NOT MAKE UP THE ABSENCE, you will see a deduction in your grade for the week. Participation, Dressing Out, and Discussion/Class Participation grades are put in every Friday by 3 p.m. LOCKERS/LOCKS: This is SUPER important. Each student will be able to use a locker of their choice for the entire semester that they are in this class. Once you have chosen a locker (usually the first three days of class) that is your locker and your locker only for the rest of the semester. It is the STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO PURCHASE A LOCK FOR THAT LOCKER; THEY ARE NOT SCHOOL PROVIDED. If a student chooses to not put a lock on their belongings, the Health and Physical Education Department is NOT RESPONSIBLE for any items that go missing or are stolen from the locker room. When you purchase a lock, you can record the combination with your teacher in case you forget your combination! ENTERING/EXITING THE LOCKERROOM: Students will enter the locker rooms from the entrance in the lower gym ACCOMPANIED BY A TEACHER. Once the bell rings to begin class, students will report to class and sit in their squad line, waiting for the roll to be called. Roll being called officially starts class. If you are not present, you are tardy. Four tardies will result in serving lunch detention. After roll is called, teachers will escort students to the locker rooms and give adequate time to dress out for class. When there is 10 minutes of class left, you will be dismissed by your teacher to return to the locker rooms and change back into your school clothes. After you change, ALL students will wait IN THE LOCKER ROOMS OR THE LOWER GYM until the BELL DISMISSES THEM. You are not allowed to leave the gym area before the bell. FOOD/DRINKS/IPODS/CELL PHONES/TABLETS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN CLASS PERIOD. NO EXCEPTIONS. FAILURE TO FOLLOW WILL RESULT IN LOSING THE ITEM FOR THE CLASS PERIOD. WHERE IS MY HEALTH CLASS? Your health class will meet in a classroom assigned by your teacher. This can be subject to change and teachers will warn you before you go into health where you will be. Further information can be found on your teacher’s website. REQUIRED HEALTH MATERIALS: You will need a 1-1.5 inch binder, notebook paper/notebook, and pens or pencils. Ask your teacher if they post their notes online. You can print those and use those for class. If you have an issue with getting your notes printed at home, please talk to your teacher and something can be figured out. CURRICULUM/TOPICS COVERED: The healthful living classes will cover a general introduction to health and physical activity, nutrition, mental/emotional health, suicide awareness and prevention, alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs/substances, and reproductive health/safety. If you would like more information on our curriculum, you can visit NC DPI website at www.ncpublicschools.org/curriculum and look for the Standard Course of Study for this subject. Students will be graded based upon dressing out and participating. Classes will begin in the same way with everyone reporting to their squad lines by the final bell. Everyone will go to the locker rooms at the same time through the lower gym entrance. It is an open tutorial session that allows students to ask for help, answer questions, and expand their knowledge. A schedule of tutorials by subject can be found on the Athens Drive Website. For Health and PE, TUTORIAL IS ON THURSDAY B LUNCH. Per new ADHS policy, students making a C OR BETTER will be required to attend 2 tutorials per quarter. Students making below a C will be required to attend 3 tutorials per quarter. ATHENS DRIVE HONOR CODE: Athens Drive High School teachers, students, and administrators value academic integrity and this has always been the case. What is different this year is that in collaboration with a group of teachers, students, parents, and administrators, we have developed a clearly defined academic integrity policy. As part of this policy, teachers and students will be required to follow a code of conduct which deals with issues such as cheating and plagiarism.
All students will have the opportunity to agree to this in writing on several different occasions when the ADHS Honor Pledge appears on exams and assignments. It is as follows: “I pledge to be honest and fair. I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this test or assignment.” __ IN OUR CLASS, WE WILL ADHERE TO THE FOLLOWING INTEGRITY GUIDELINES:
1. Study and work in an honest and respectable manner.
2. You MUST complete and submit your own work.
3. You are encouraged to work with others only when the teacher tells you it’s okay.
4. DO NOT copy someone else’s work in or out of the classroom.
5. Do not get help from anyone or any site outside of the classroom.
6. CITE ALL YOUR SOURCES.
7. Quizzes and Tests are DONE ON YOUR OWN.
8. KEEP YOUR EYES ON YOUR OWN PAPER ALWAYS. Don’t put yourself in a suspicious situation.
9. Cover your work.
10. DO NOT PULL OUT A CELL PHONE WHEN COMPLETING ANY WORK.
IF A VIOLATION OF THE HONOR CODE OCCURS OR IS SUSPECTED: The students involved will be invited to meet privately with the instructor and the behavior will be discussed and paperwork submitted in accordance with the ADHS Academic Integrity Violation Procedures. For specifics of this procedure, please see: http://tinyurl.com/mq3tedt
